The project will widen the 2-mile stretch of road to five lanes with curb and gutter, including two through-lanes in each direction with a center turn lane. A widening project aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety on I-71 in Carroll and Gallatin counties is in progress. The project will widen I-71 from its configuration of two lanes in each direction, to three lanes.
A shoulder has been paved to temporarily accommodate traffic during this phase of the construction project. Most of the work is currently taking place in the median behind barrier wall.
This widening project includes a bridge replacement over KY 47. The current bridges will be replaced with a new, single span bridge matching the median widening throughout the project area.
The speed limit in the work zone is now reduced to 55 MPH. Law enforcement will be on-site to ensure compliance.
The project has an expected completion date of Nov. 1, 2026. Learn more about the project here.

A traffic shift has been implemented on the eastbound side of the I-275 Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge over the Ohio River in Boone County.
A temporary speed limit reduction of 55 MPH is currently in place. A queue warning system has also been installed on both sides of the river to warn motorists of any stopped or slowed traffic on/near the bridge.
Eastbound Traffic Shift (drivers heading from Indiana to Kentucky):
-
On Monday, May 5, crews performed a traffic switch. Traffic will ultimately merge to the left lane ahead of the bridge, and then shift over to the right lane near the bridge's main span.
Westbound Traffic (drivers heading from Kentucky to Indiana):
-
A single right lane closure is in place on I-275 westbound. This lane closure begins at the top of the hill, and spans the length of the Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge.
T1 Steel Repairs:
-
The scheduled T1 steel repairs began on Mon., Jan 20.
Looking Ahead:
-
Once floor beam repairs are made, current weight restrictions for emergency vehicles will be lifted.
July 2025
Beginning Sunday, June 15, a 45-day closure will be in place on Bristow Road from south of Timber Lane to the intersection of KY 536 and KY 1303. This will allow a safe area for crews to begin constructing a roundabout at the intersection. Through traffic on KY 536 will be maintained. Local traffic will be maintained on KY 1303 from Richardson Road to Timber Lane.
Motorists can detour using KY 536 to Dixie Highway, to either Richardson Road or Industrial Road.
NOTE: the bridge east of Dixie Highway on Richardson Road currently has a weight limit of three tons. Any vehicles weighing more than three tons should use Industrial Road as a detour.
The closure is expected to be in place through Aug. 1, 2025. KYTC will provide an update if additional days are needed.

Traffic switches and lane shifts will occur as work progresses. Barrier wall installation for bridge pier work is also expected. We will provide updates once this work is scheduled.
Additionally, high friction surface will be added to the I-71 northbound to I-75 northbound ramp to improve traction. Learn more about the project here.
